On October 29, 2013, at approximately 6:20 AM, Trooper Christian Flores was on patrol on Sample Road, when he drove up on a traffic crash at Military Trail.
Flores observed one of the drivers, in the front seat of one of the vehicles, with his head tilted back, as if he was asleep. Flores attempted to awaken the driver, who was unresponsive and noticed that his eyes were open.
Flores assessed the driver for possible injuries and checked for a pulse. As he was assessing the driver, Broward County Sheriff’s Deputy Pedro Cordero arrived at the scene. Flores determined that the driver did not have a pulse and both Flores and Cordero removed the driver from the vehicle and began Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Flores and Cordero performed CPR until the Pompano Beach Fire Rescue arrived on scene and took over the resuscitation efforts.
The crash occurred in the jurisdiction of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. Their Traffic Homicide Investigation Section responded to the scene due to the condition of the driver. The BSO – THI deputy received information later, from the North Broward Medical Center, that the driver was listed in serious condition and admitted to the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) for treatment.
The Patrol commends Flores and Cordero for their actions during this incident. Without their quick response and decisive action, there could have been grave consequences.
