Major Ken Howes or
Florida Highway Patrol
For Release July 27, 2001
TALLAHASSEE - Colonel Chris Knight, Director of the Florida Highway Patrol, today announced that real-time statewide traffic event information is now available on the Internet. The "Live Traffic Crash and Road Condition Report" can be accessed from the Patrol's web site at www.flhsmv.gov/fhp.
The new website displays a map of Florida divided into counties and by FHP Troop. Once the site is accessed, the user needs only to click on the troop area and they will get a screen that displays all of the traffic events currently being investigated by the FHP in that region. The page, automatically updated every five minutes, will be a real-time "snapshot" of the Florida Highway Patrol Computer-Aided Dispatch System that is used throughout the state.
"The news media and the public are rightfully concerned about traffic and how it affects their ability to navigate our highways," Colonel Knight said. "We are excited about this new capability and technology that allows us to not only provide a valuable service but also reduce the number of calls that our dispatch centers receive inquiring about traffic conditions," Knight added.
