Chief Jim Howell
Florida Highway Patrol
For Release September 12, 2003:
TALLAHASSEE: The Florida Highway Patrol is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Nancy McArthur as FHP’s new Public Affairs Specialist for Troop H, effective September 5, 2003. Nancy will serve as PAS for Leon, Gadsden, Wakulla, Jefferson, Liberty, Taylor, Franklin and Madison Counties.
Traditionally, only a sworn Florida Highway Patrol officer has served in the capacity of Public Affairs Officer. In 2002, a new non-sworn position was created entitled Public Affairs Specialist. This position was designated to replace the PAO position in Troop H, held by Lieutenant Kenneth Knowles until his retirement. Due to budget issues, the position sat vacant until recent authorization was granted to fill it.
Ms. McArthur will be responsible for developing, promoting and presenting FHP public safety programs for Troop H. She will also be the liaison with the General Headquarters Public Affairs Office in the distribution of statewide media issues. Her new assignment will include maintaining a close relationship with the media, coordinating news coverage at scenes or agency events and arranging press conferences.
Ms. McArthur is a native Georgian and a 1983 graduate of Carson-Newman College. She resides in Tallahassee with her husband and son.
