For Release August 26, 2005:

Tallahassee – Florida’s residents and visitors are being urged to take caution as Hurricane Katrina moves toward the Florida Panhandle area. Motorists are advised to monitor the progress of Katrina and listen for any bulletins from county emergency management centers.

Katrina is forecasted to affect the northern Gulf of Mexico with its dangerous winds and rain. Residents and visitors in Katrina’s projected path should be prepared for major damaging hurricane winds, high storm surge and dangerous flood conditions overnight Sunday into early Monday.

The Florida Highway Patrol is warning all drivers, particularly those operating commercial and high profile vehicles (including trailers) to seek shelter before the arrival of high gusting winds.

The statewide emergency hotline for traffic related information is 1-800-342-3557.
