DHSMV URGES FLORIDIANS TO INPUT EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION
CONTACT For DHSMV:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, APRIL 23, 2007
Tallahassee - The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) is urging Floridians to take advantage of the Agency’s online system that allows Floridians to voluntarily provide the name, address and phone number of an emergency contact for use by law enforcement in case of an emergency.
This innovative system was developed after the unfortunate death of Tiffiany Olson in a traffic crash in 2005. Her mother, Christine Olson, could not be immediately notified of the incident due to the lack of emergency contact information by law enforcement officials handling the crash. Ms. Olson contacted her state legislator, Representative Bill Galvano (R-Bradenton), who put her in contact with DHSMV. Through the cooperative efforts of all three, the emergency contact information system was developed and ensures that notice is made to appropriate people immediately, and this type of unfortunate incident does not happen again.
“This is just a part of our Department’s overall Making Changes That Matter To You efforts,” said Electra Bustle, Executive Director for DHSMV. “We encourage all Floridians to take a few moments and input this vital information. In the event of an unfortunate emergency, having this information readily at hand will allow law enforcement officials to quickly get in touch with those listed as a contact.”
To date, 484,410 Floridians have taken advantage of this system and input their emergency contact information. We encourage anyone with a valid Florida driver license or identification card to go online to www.flhsmv.gov and enter this vital information. The secure information will then be immediately available only to law enforcement officials.
The DHSMV team that assisted in putting the system in place has been chosen to receive an American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) International Award in the category for Customer Service Excellence.
