Trooper Steven TurnerOn February 4, 2023, Trooper Steven D. Turner responded to the I-75 and Overpass Road area regarding an active pursuit of burglary suspects driving a stolen vehicle. During the pursuit, one of the suspects discharged a firearm at passing motorists. Turner engaged in the pursuit and, as the suspects exited I-75, successfully initiated a PIT, rendering the suspect vehicle inoperative. Both suspects exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Turner gave chase to one of the suspects, knowing the suspect may be armed with a firearm. As Turner attempted to apprehend the suspect, the suspect displayed a firearm and discharged one round, striking Turner in the abdomen. Turner returned fire, neutralizing the threat. Turner was transported via air ambulance to a trauma center for his gunshot wound. Turner displayed the highest level of bravery, gallantry, and courage by engaging in a dangerous pursuit of armed felons, ultimately resulting in deadly gunfire. His actions exposed him to great peril and personal danger, going above and beyond the call of duty.
