Trooper Matthew Hannon
On February 7, 2023, Trooper Matthew F. Hannon conducted a traffic stop on a truck tractor-semi-trailer combination based on information that the driver possessed multiple active warrants for Kidnapping and Rape. The law enforcement agency leading the investigation electronically tracked the suspect and vehicle and relayed the location to FHP. After Hannon verified the vehicle at a fueling station, he positioned his patrol vehicle in front of the suspect vehicle to prevent any further movement from the area. As Hannon approached the truck, the driver exited the driver’s seat and stopped in the open doorway. The driver was given verbal commands to proceed from the truck, which were refused immediately. The driver quickly reentered the cab portion of the truck and attempted to close the vehicle door. Hannon immediately prevented the driver from closing the door and continued to give verbal commands for the driver to exit the vehicle. During the encounter, the driver grabbed a loaded firearm from the truck and pointed it directly at Hannon. Hannon tactically exited the doorway of the truck and took cover behind a nearby pole before discharging his handgun at the suspect. After backup arrived, the suspect was located unresponsive in the truck. Hannon assisted other first responders in rendering medical aid to the suspect.
