Junk a Vehicle Tag and Title
-
How do I Junk my moped?
In Florida, mopeds are not issued titles; therefore, they cannot be “junked”. A moped is considered a “Registration Only” vehicle and is only required to have a license plate (registration).
As a result, you will only need to surrender the tag and registration – which will then cancel the license plate (registration).
Is your license plate (tag) available? If so, please do the following:
- Surrender your license plate
- Make sure you get proof of the canceled registration, for your records
*NOTE: To avoid driver license suspension, please ensure that your insurance is canceled after you surrender your license plate.
Is your license plate (tag) unavailable? If so, please provide the following:
- Submit an affidavit (see DMS procedure RS-43, page 3, or example below), AND
- Proof of identity (see DMS procedure TL-01, page 4)
- Make sure you get proof of the canceled registration, for your records
*NOTE: To avoid driver license suspension, please ensure that your insurance is canceled after you surrender your license plate.

How do I Junk my motor vehicle?
In Florida, motor vehicles are titled and registered; therefore they can be “junked”. In order to junk your title, you will need to have the title canceled.
Take the vehicle to a salvage yard, and please do the following:
- If the certificate of title is available, it must be provided to the salvage dealer
- Please sign the “Transfer of Title by Seller” section – transferring interest to the salvage dealer
- If the certificate of title is not available, form HSMV 82101 must be accurately completed by the owner. Once the owner receives the duplicate certificate of title, you will follow instructions listed above (a).
- The salvage yard will then junk the title
*NOTE: At this time, you can also surrender your license plate (registration). Please follow the instructions listed above (Under: Junk my Moped)
An individual may surrender his/her license plate and registration to:
- A local Florida tax collector’s office
- License plate agency
- Local driver license office in person
- By mail – Direct Mail & Fast Title Services, 2900 Apalachee Parkway, A330, MS 72, Tallahassee, FL 32399
*If you are surrendering your license plate by mail, please also include a written statement that specifies why you are surrendering the plate (such as: junking vehicle, canceling insurance, etc.)
Check your local phone book government pages or visit the following link for addresses to your local county tax collector office.
